Description

This Warehouse and Receiving Summer Support position is an hourly paid contract role, with a minimum of 30 hours weekly.  The main area of focus for this position will be in the receiving department and warehouse, will include most Saturdays, and is responsible for providing management support by working closely with the Assistant Manager, Receiving and the Assistant Manager, Workroom at MCC Thrift on Kent.  

Qualifications:                                                                                          

 All MCC workers are expected to exhibit a commitment to: a personal Christian faith and discipleship; active church membership; and biblical nonviolent peacemaking.

 Required

  • Self-motivated and willing to take initiative while at the same time willing to work as a team with the MCC Thrift on Kent General Manager, other staff and volunteers
  • Ability to create an atmosphere of a positive Christian presence within the shop
  • Strong interpersonal skills with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Willing and able to work with a variety of people in a friendly way
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently
  • Requires about 6 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday
  • Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary
  • Sitting may be required only intermittently and occasionally
  • Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions with other staff
  • Able to go on truck and help with furniture pick-up and delivery
  • Healthy balance of patience, humour and energy
  • Heart for justice, active peacemaking and global understanding
  • Basic computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel and Internet)
  • Police check will be required once hired
  • Must be able to legally work in Canada

 Preferred

  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Awareness of second hand market, retail trends and merchandising

Duties:

Receiving

  • With management support, will work with volunteers as they relate to the receiving department, sharing MCC mission and values with volunteers and donors
  • Work with the management staff in the operation of the shop to ensure teamwork and a desirable working and shopping environment
  • Organize and maintain receiving area and storage area with the Assistant Managers, Receiving and Workroom
  • Co-ordinate with managers and volunteers to work at receiving and presorting of donations
  • Assist donors and customers in loading and unloading of furniture and other items
  • Will be involved with managers in the responsibility of waste management and recycling
  • Be a key person in expressing appreciation to donors for their contributions and apply MCC decisions regarding accepted donations
  • Become knowledgeable in policy and regulation regarding donations and apply these

 

Workroom and Retail

  • Share responsibility to coordinate efficient usage of workroom with Assistant Managers, Receiving and Workroom
  • Be one of the team members responsible for safety in the workspace for volunteers and staff
  • Coordinate and share the duties of cleaning and/or repair of furniture and other items
  • Share in the responsibility of displaying, pricing and upkeep of the furniture on the retail floor

 

Other

  • Provide back-up support for managers as needed
  • With the General Manager, assist with grounds upkeep and assist in general building maintenance
  • Share the news about MCC Thrift on Kent and the network in the community
  • Participate in MCCO orientations as needed
  • Participate in staff meetings and thrift network as required
  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use your personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, volunteers, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized
  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public; communicate MCC's values, articulating the importance of MCC's criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC
  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public

Location Description:

Kitchener-Waterloo is for all intents and purposes one city, with a combined population of approximately 500,000. Located in the 'golden triangle' in southwestern Ontario, its roots have been technological and agricultural, and both continue to factor significantly in the local economy. There are a great variety of opportunities available in the areas of recreation and cultural events. Urban renewal in both downtowns is providing new ways to experience culture and leisure. K-W is also an educational centre, with two universities and one community college. There is a rich mixture of cultures, and Mennonites are a strong part of that diversity.

 

Thrift on Kent is located at 50 Kent Avenue in Kitchener.

The individual must be able to do this physically demanding job.

 This position will require some evening and Saturday work hours.
