Founded in 1921, Sunnyside Wesleyan Church is a diverse mix of university students, families, youth, young professionals, and seniors. While the church building is in Old Ottawa South close to downtown, and on the doorstep of Carleton University, the church consists of about 250 people from across the city and region. Most congregants come from other denominations or from no church background. We meet for Sunday worship services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and in smaller in-person and hybrid gatherings. Our services are informal and engaging, rich in the reading of scripture and prayer, inclusive of children, appreciative of contemporary music and hymns, conforming to the church calendar and Wesleyan tradition. Current features of Sunnyside include: 1) development of ministry teams to live the priesthood of all believers, 2) carefully discerned rental agreements with a few groups or ministries with a view toward synergistic partnerships, 3) turning outward to connect with and support local ministries as well as being more strategic in national and global partnerships with Christian missions and missionaries.
The successful candidate will provide leadership to a pastoral team and to the board of administration in order to help Sunnyside Wesleyan Church be:
- A place where we experience God’s transforming love through the Holy Spirit, by faith, the Word of God, worship and prayer;
- A people being transformed by the love and grace of Jesus as we practise authentic community;
- A presence of God’s transforming love in Old Ottawa South, across the city and around the world, through acts of generosity, compassion, and outreach.
Education and Experience
Candidates must evidence a compelling sense of God’s calling to ministry and should have at least four years of experience, ideally as a senior pastor or in an executive role in a Christian organization. A graduate level education in theology, or its equivalent as recognized by the Wesleyan church, is required.
Note: While candidates need not be from The Wesleyan Church, they must be willing to affirm the Wesleyan articles of faith and governance, and if selected agree to join the Wesleyan Church of Canada. All applications are subject to approval by the District Superintendent.
