Reports to: Finance Manager

Status: Part-time Permanent (approximately 20 hours/week)

Compensation: Salary (or hourly wage) and 3 weeks paid vacation, increasing as per shoreside policy manual

Job Summary:

This person supports the Finance Manager by assisting with the processing of financial transactions and administration. Work location is at 451 Herald Street, Victoria BC though some work from home may be possible after the training period. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

About SALTS and Our Mission:

SALTS is a registered charity that provides youth mentorship on tall ships. Each year, 1700 young people (ages 13-25) receive “sail and life training” aboard one of our two schooners. Our mission statement is “to develop the spiritual, relational, and physical potential of young people through sail training, shipboard life and associated activities in a Christian environment.” SALTS has 22 full-time, year-round employees and an annual operating budget of ~$2.5 million. Essential Functions and Accountabilities:

  • Ensure accuracy of core financial data (AP, AR, Inventory subledgers) in Quickbooks
  • Receive, code, and enter vendor invoices. Follow up with managers on coding and approvals as required
  • Agree payables to supplier statements and timely payment of payables, distributing cheques and supporting documents for signature
  • Review and enter credit card expenses and reconcile credit card statements monthly
  • Process all revenue and deferred revenue payments received
  • Record revenues at time earned and transfer from deferred accounts
  • Ensure bank deposits are done on a timely basis
  • Maintain and manage inventory and sales records for SALTS-branded gear
  • Maintain sales records for donated boats
  • Organize and file paper and electronic documents

Other Duties:

  • A satisfactory criminal record check is an employment requirement and must be updated when requested
  • Assumes other responsibilities as specified by the Finance Manager

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proven experience in a financial administration role
  • Excellent working knowledge of Quickbooks (or similar) software and MS Office suite
  • Ability to plan, organize and effectively manage multiple priorities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a cooperative, friendly attitude
  • Professional and courteous phone manner
  • Good written and verbal communication skills


Education and/or work experience that prepares the candidate for a financial accounting role involving accounts payable/receivable and other financial transactions
