JOB DESCRIPTION FOR:

PASTOR OF OUTREACH AND DISCIPLESHIP

WILLOWDALE BAPTIST CHURCH

Spring, 2019

The Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship will work to support many of the ministries of the

church under the leadership of the Senior Pastor. This person will work together seamlessly

with others on the church staff as we function as a team to accomplish the ministry vision

that the Lord is imparting to staff and church leadership. The scope of this job takes in,

broadly speaking, everything to do with the ministries and potential ministries that reach out

into the community seeking to draw people in as well as the ministries that seek to grow

people into fully developed followers of Jesus Christ. This will be a permanent, part-time (20

hours per week) position.

The successful candidate will be a team-oriented, positive, humble and teachable immersionbaptized

follower of Jesus Christ who seeks to honour the Lord in all areas of his life. The

Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship will attempt to exhibit a lifestyle that brings glory to the

Saviour. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in leadership and

mentorship. He will be able to participate in church services in a leadership role. He will have

shown a passion for communicating the gospel to the lost. Spiritual gifting will include

teaching, preaching, as well as encouragement. He should fit the description of an elder as

defined by the WBC bylaws.

The Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship will be in agreement with WBC’s statement of faith

and bylaws. Experience in leadership in an evangelical church setting is an asset, as is Bible

College or Seminary training.

Because the Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship will need to work embedded in the local

community, consideration will be given to the person living or who is willing to relocate into

the North York area within a 30 minute commute of the church.

The following are the general roles and responsibilities of the Pastor of Outreach and

Discipleship. The duties may be further clarified as the successful candidate begins the

ministry and finds his place in the WBC staff ministry team.

1. Sunday Participation

The Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship (hereafter referred to as the POD) will be regularly

involved in WBC’s Sunday morning services according to his ability and giftings. He will be

expected to be able to make announcements, participate in the call to worship and other

worship leading opportunities, scripture readings and other elements of service leading

including communion leadership, leading sharing times, participation in the ministry of

baptism and occasional preaching. Any musical abilities can be used on the worship team as

well according to the worship leading schedule, although musical abilities are not required.

The POD will attend all Sunday morning worship services along with his family and the family

will make WBC their home church. The POD and his wife (if married) will be willing to become

members of WBC (based on their testimony of trusting faith in Jesus Christ and baptism by

immersion).

2. Life Groups

The Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship will have overall responsibility for and be the

“champion” for WBC’s Life Group (small group) ministry. This responsibility will include the

recruitment and training of Life Group leaders and members, the strengthening of existing

Life Groups, and the planting of new Life Groups throughout the WBC family. The POD will

take the lead in finalizing and implementing a Life Group Growth Strategy currently being

formed by the Strategic Ministry Planning Team which will seek to plant at least one Life

Group in every condominium complex, apartment building and seniors’ residence within a 10-

minute walk of the WBC building.

The POD will also join another initiative currently underway to increase the congregation’s

understanding of the basics of the faith through a basic discipleship series that people will be

trained in and then, after taking the training themselves, be qualified to lead others through.

3. Outreach and Evangelism

The Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship will take leadership and have general oversight over

the current ministries of WBC that exist primarily for outreach, evangelism and discipleship...

Evangelism Explosion, English as a Second Language classes, Community Dinner (last

Wednesday of each month), Missions Committee, Young Adult Ministry, Baptism and

Membership processes. The POD is not expected to serve in each of these ministries; he is the

staff member having oversight of these areas.

The POD will also take leadership and provide oversight for the development of any new

ministries with an “outward focus” These ministries may include various evangelistic

endeavours, discipleship initiatives, mentorship plans, community outreaches or potential

parking lot ministries. Some evening and weekend work should be expected.

4. Development of WBC’s Adoption Strategy

The Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship will take the lead in crafting a comprehensive

adoption strategy the goal of which will be to help people go from casual visitor… to regular

attender… to contributing attender… to committed member… to serving leader. The elders of

WBC can be extremely helpful in the development and implementation of this adoption

strategy.

This will help people identify with WBC and commit to not only attending here but to using

their gifts and talents to serve the Lord in the ministries of WBC, thereby expanding our

ministry reach.

5. General input into WBC’s website, social media presence, communication pieces and

advertisements

Communication, both within the congregation and to the community about WBC’s ministry, is

an important part of the Pastor of Outreach and Discipleship’s responsibilities as he works

with other staff and volunteers. These areas may also include updating Facebook, Twitter,

Instagram, etc. The POD will, ideally, be part of a Social Media team which will also include

the Office Administrator, Ministry Co-ordinator and select other tech-savvy volunteers. This

group may also work on other communication needs including updating the screen in the

lobby, finishing the church re-branding, and keeping the welcome centre and welcome

packages functioning well. Others of WBC’s leaders already have a vested interest in the area

of social media, branding, and communication… and can, therefore, be relied upon for

significant help in this area.

6. Other duties

Other ministry responsibilities may be assigned by the Senior Pastor as the successful

candidate becomes part of the WBC staff team and as needs arise in the ministry. The Pastor

of Outreach and Discipleship will be expected to attend and take part in staff meetings

(currently on Tuesday mornings) and attend the Sunday morning services (except when on

vacation or leave), making sure to arrive at least half an hour before the service time to be

available to the congregation. The POD will also be an invited guest at Board of Management

meetings and, ideally, will become a member of the Strategic Ministry Planning Team.

Important Note:

The WBC staff and board are aware that this is a part-time position as currently advertised. It

is not expected that the successful candidate will be able to achieve all the expectations

immediately. We are striving for a culture of team work and interdependence where each

leader feels empowered, encouraged and supported through the ups and downs of ministry

and where every staff member and volunteer can develop a healthy, balanced, God-focused

lifestyle!

Applications for this position will be accepted until June 15, 2019 after which time applicants

that the search team consider to be a good potential fit for the position will be contacted for

an interview. Please apply with resume to Senior Pastor, Bruce Jones, at bruce@willowdalebaptist.com
