Come and share your expertise!  We are seeking a lawyer to serve on the Legal Affairs team as our Associate Director. This is a chance for you to leverage your legal skills and experience to support Christian charities across Canada in becoming as healthy and effective as possible.

Have you served on a church board or practiced in the area of charity law before? Do you want to come work under an experienced lawyer as part of a team that is fundamental to supporting our ministry? HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL GET TO DO IN THIS ROLE:

Monitor external developments: read, research, and network as needed in order to remain current vis-à-vis court decisions, tribunal decisions, legislation, and regulations, as it relates to in-house matters. Your input will be very valuable to the Director of Legal Affairs in determining our organizational responses on various matters.

Be our in-house expert to our Member Support Team. These professionals will benefit from your knowledge and legal insights on a broad range of topics, and you’ll help craft answers to our member charities from all over Canada. You’ll also get the chance to capture that expertise in the form of articles, webinars, and more.

Handle corporate legal matters ensuring our organizational compliance. You’ll review contracts, oversee privacy matters, and support our department heads as needed.

Support our ministry in the areas of Privacy, Governance, and Risk Management by advising leaders, drafting policies, and supporting internal initiatives. You’ll serve as our Privacy Officer, as well as our AI Oversight Officer.

You have experience with CRA policies, the Income Tax Act, and trust law. Some experience or familiarity with employment law is ideal. You also need to be driven to learn more all the time, which we will give you the time to do.

Passionate about charity issues

You are motivated to support Christian ministries and want to help them fulfill their missions. You might have served on a board or volunteered some other way, but you have a heart for service and doing important, meaningful work.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • LL.B./JD (law degree) required along with membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • 1 year relevant experience with Christian charities, either in charity leadership at the staff, volunteer, or board level, or as a service provider in the practice of charity law
  • 1-2 years experience in relevant practice areas
  • Excellent, demonstrated presentation and writing skills
  • Knowledge of the Income Tax Act (charity), corporate, privacy, AI, and trust law
  • Demonstrated ability to read legislation, cases and technical documents and apply outcomes to Christian charity context
  • Some litigation experience an asset
  • Ability to grasp new concepts quickly and confidence in their ability to grow (continuous learner)
  • Strong interest in serving people and solving problems
  • Strong knowledge of Christian faith, life, practice, and theology and its practice within Christian ministries and in their external relations and circumstances
  • Agreement with CCCC’s Statement of Faith and Community Covenant

COMPENSATION

Between $90 000 - $100 000, based on experience and how well you meet our qualifications.

LOCATION

This position will be designated as either Hybrid or Remote based on your geographical location relative to our Waterloo office. Those designated as Hybrid are generally given the flexibility to decide how often they would like to work from home throughout the week.
