Description

Over 35 Years of Growing Hope

The Mustard Seed is a Christian non-profit organization that has been caring for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty since 1984. Operating in five cities across Alberta and British Columbia, The Mustard Seed is a supportive haven where people can have their physical, mental, and spiritual needs met and grow toward greater health and independence.

The idea for a street ministry came from Pat Nixon who founded The Mustard Seed in 1984, opening the first location in Calgary. Today, the organization operates in multiple cities, including Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Medicine Hat in Alberta, and Kamloops in British Columbia. All locations offer an expansive range of programs and services to serve our most vulnerable community members by providing basic needs (food, clothing, and hygiene items), education, employment programs, health and wellness services, spiritual care, housing, and emergency shelter.

The more than 550 staff who work at The Mustard Seed care about the whole person – physical, mental and spiritual. They recognize that the root causes of poverty and homelessness are complex and diverse, and so the organization continues to grow with the needs of those it serves.

The Mustard Seed owns and manages over 525 shelter beds and 325 housing units for low income and formerly homeless individuals (and provides housing in addition to the 325 units through a contract with the Alberta government -- representing housing for an additional 80 people but not units owned by the Seed) in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Kamloops, BC. Additional services include:  basic needs, health and wellness, employment, spiritual care, community engagement and community impact centres.
